$160,000 awarded for dance, music and theatre arts projects

SEATTLE (October 27, 2014) — The Seattle Office of Arts & Culture announces $160,000 in awards to 39 individual artists working in dance, music and theatre arts. Seattle’s CityArtist Projects annual funding program assists Seattle artists in developing and presenting their work.
The program, which supports new works, works-in-progress, or works taken to the next stage in 2015, received about 130 applications. Nearly 40% of the awards will go to first-time recipients. Awards range up to $8,000 and are anticipated to stage project presentations within a year. A peer-review panel evaluated proposals based on criteria such as artistic merit and potential, public access and impact and feasibility.
Awardees in 2015 include Desdemona Chiang, who will produce a new bilingual ASL/English play about the intersection of hearing and Deaf culture and the controversy over cochlear implants featuring a mixed ensemble of Deaf and hearing actors; Alice Gosti, who willcreate a dance performance that brings politics and history to the foreground with questions of identity, community and where art belongs; Alex Guy, who will compose, record and mix a musical score for a feature length documentary about immigration and belonging; and Mirta Wymerszberg, who will recreate and perform a children’s theatrical work about ‘el contador de cuentos,” the storyeller of ancient Latin American children stories and songs.

Funding is offered to different artistic disciplines in alternating years. In 2014, CityArtists awarded $160,000 to 33 individual artists working in literary, media, film and visual arts. CityArtist Projects is part of the Office of Arts & Culture investments in ensuring Seattle residents have access to a wide variety of arts and cultural opportunities.
